Senior Tax Accountant - Financial Reporting

Position Overview

We seek a tax accounting leader with insurance industry experience and a desire to build efficiencies and automate processes where possible. The Senior Tax Accountant will report to the company’s Head of Tax and will be responsible for overseeing and managing various tax compliance and reporting functions for the enterprise. This includes preparing federal, state, and local tax returns, ensuring adherence to tax laws, identifying tax-saving opportunities, and supporting tax audits. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of insurance industry tax regulations, the ability to analyze complex tax issues, and the experience to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Specific responsibilities would include but are not limited to: 

  • Tax Compliance & Reporting:
    • Prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns, ensuring accurate and timely filings.
    • Assist with the preparation of quarterly and annual tax provisions in accordance with ASC 740.
    • Support the preparation of the enterprise’s financial statements, ensuring that tax-related disclosures comply with accounting standards.
    • Prepare and file insurance premium tax returns and other regulatory filings required for the insurance industry.
  • Tax Planning & Strategy:
    • Stay current on federal, state, and local tax legislation and regulations, particularly those impacting the insurance sector.
  • Audit Support & Risk Management:
    • Support tax audits by providing requested documentation and resolving inquiries from tax authorities.
  • Process Improvement & Automation:
    • Recommend improvements to tax processes and workflows to increase efficiency and accuracy.
    • Help identify opportunities for automation of tax-related tasks and systems.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the finance, legal, and accounting teams to support tax compliance and strategic initiatives.
    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders on the tax implications of business decisions, acquisitions, and other corporate activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum 3-5 years relevant work experience required.
  • Understanding of statutory accounting principles (SAP) and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) fundamentals and financial statements.
  • Experience in the insurance industry is a plus.
  • Experience with Corptax compliance and provision software is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Solid analytical, problem solving and financial troubleshooting skills.
